Vada, in the province of Livorno, Tuscany, Italy...
...is located a few kilometers from the mouth of the Cecina River and the homonymous municipality. In a 45-minute drive by car, you can reach Volterra.
The town of Vada was once known as Vada Volterrana (or Volaterrana) and was, in the Etruscan-Roman era, the port of Volterra. The name itself probably derives from the term "vadum" which means "landing" and recalls this function. Recent archaeological studies have revealed the presence of several buildings and finds of the Etruscan era in the area of Vada called San Gaetano.
The settlement, also mentioned by Cicero and Pliny, arose on the Old Aurelia: in fact, the kilometer stone bearing the 287th kilometer from the Capitoline Hill of Rome is observable on the central square of the village. When Rutilio Namaziano visited Vada in 417 AD, he documented the presence of salt pans in full operation, and production continued even in the Middle Ages, mentioned in numerous archive documents...
Was Vada a refuge for Saracen pirates?
It seems that Vada later became a refuge for Saracen pirates, engaged in raids on the sea, of which there are testimonies of amphorae and terracotta vases lying on the seabed: the area is in fact also known as Rada del Saraceno and there are several dozen underwater wrecks in the nearby Secche di Vada, visible with scuba diving.
The ancient and best preserved building in Vada is the Torre di Vada. It was built by the Pisans towards the end of the 13th century and used as a lighthouse for coastal navigation in a stretch of sea that has always been very risky due to its low and sandy bottoms. The Tower is now a laboratory of environmental education and exhibition center.
Today the village is largely located on land that was once marshy. Some areas of the town are still below sea level. In the 19th century, the area was reclaimed thanks to the work of the Lorena family, who made the coastal areas habitable and cultivable.
